Retainer-Rock®: Where Structural Performance Meets Landscape Design
For many years, retaining walls were viewed purely as engineering structures or functional solutions designed to hold back soil with little consideration given to aesthetics.

Today, landscape architects, fencing contractors, developers and civil engineers increasingly expect retaining walls to do far more. They must create usable land, complement surrounding landscapes, integrate with boundary treatments and provide long-term value without compromising structural performance.
This shift has fuelled growing demand for modular retaining wall systems that combine engineering excellence with architectural appeal, says Paul Cartwright, Business Development Director for Elite Precast Concrete.
Paul continues, one such solution is Retainer-Rock®, Elite Precast Concrete's modular retaining wall system, which has been developed to offer the strength of precast concrete alongside the appearance of natural stone or a smooth face alternative.
Manufactured in accordance with BS EN 15258, the system provides an attractive, cost-effective alternative to traditional cast in-situ concrete retaining walls.
Creating More Than Just a Retaining Wall
Retaining walls frequently become a prominent visual feature within a development.
Whether installed alongside highways, within housing schemes, commercial landscapes, parks or public open spaces, they often remain visible for decades.
Rather than presenting a plain concrete face, Retainer-Rock® walling is available in two textured finishes:
Cobblestone, providing a traditional natural stone appearance.
Liscio Stone, delivering a cleaner contemporary architectural finish.
Both options enable retaining structures to blend sympathetically into surrounding landscapes while maintaining the durability expected from precast concrete. Straight and curved walls can be created using standard blocks, allowing designers greater flexibility without increasing installation complexity.
Supporting Modern Landscape Design
Landscape design increasingly involves making the most of challenging topography.
Steep embankments, sloping developments and restricted sites often require significant level changes. Rather than losing valuable land, retaining walls enable designers to create terraces, level gardens, parking areas, pedestrian routes and usable public spaces.
Retainer-Rock® allows these spaces to be created quickly through its dry-laid modular construction. Unlike traditional masonry or cast concrete walls, installation is not dependent upon extensive formwork or prolonged curing periods, helping projects progress more rapidly while reducing disruption on site.
The modular nature of the system also simplifies future extensions or alterations, making it particularly attractive for phased developments.
Complementing Fencing Systems
For fencing contractors, retaining walls frequently form part of a wider boundary solution.
Housing developments, schools, commercial premises and infrastructure projects commonly require retaining walls combined with timber fencing, steel railings, acoustic barriers or security fencing.
By establishing a stable retained level, Retainer-Rock® creates an ideal platform for adjoining fencing installations while providing attractive transitions between differing site levels. The natural stone appearance also avoids the industrial look often associated with traditional concrete retaining structures, improving the overall appearance of boundary treatments.
Delivering Engineering Confidence
While appearance is important, retaining walls remain structural elements that must perform reliably throughout their design life. Retainer-Rock® combines substantial concrete mass with an engineered interlocking arrangement. Where required, a tie-rod jointing system can be incorporated, allowing standard single-depth blocks to construct walls up to approximately 4.5 metres high without requiring wider gravity wall sections, subject to engineering design and site conditions.
The result is an efficient retaining solution that maximises usable land while maintaining stability and reducing excavation requirements.
Proven Across Multiple Sectors
The versatility of Retainer-Rock® has already been demonstrated on projects ranging from residential developments to major infrastructure schemes.
One notable example is Sandy Oaks Residential Park, where a 2.5-metre-high retaining wall was required to protect homes and gardens from potential landslips while complementing the surrounding woodland setting. The development demanded a retaining solution that was not only structurally robust but visually sympathetic to the natural environment.
Retainer-Rock® successfully delivered both objectives, providing long-term earth retention alongside an attractive natural stone finish that enhanced the overall appearance of the development.
The system has also been selected for major infrastructure projects, including the £10 million upgrade of Dronfield Wastewater Treatment Works. Working alongside contractor CPC Civils on behalf of Yorkshire Water, multiple Retainer-Rock® walls were installed to provide durable earth retention around the upgraded treatment works.
Although fundamentally an engineering project, appearance remained important due to the site's visibility. The textured wall finish enabled the retaining structures to integrate more successfully within the wider environment while providing the durability and low maintenance demanded by critical infrastructure.
A Sustainable Long-Term Solution
Precast concrete continues to gain popularity because much of the manufacturing process takes place under controlled factory conditions, reducing waste and improving quality consistency.
Delivered ready to install, Retainer-Rock® minimises on-site operations while eliminating the need for extensive formwork and reducing programme durations. Its durable concrete construction also provides a long service life with minimal maintenance requirements, helping reduce whole-life costs for asset owners.
Engineering Meets Landscaping
As developments become increasingly space constrained and greater emphasis is placed on visual quality, retaining walls are evolving from hidden structural necessities into key landscape features.
Whether creating terraced housing developments, defining commercial boundaries, supporting infrastructure or enhancing public realm projects, modern retaining wall systems must successfully balance structural performance with aesthetics.
Retainer-Rock® demonstrates that these objectives need not be mutually exclusive. By combining rapid installation, engineered performance, natural stone finishes and design flexibility, it offers contractors, landscape architects and developers a retaining wall solution that performs as well visually as it does structurally.
For fencing professionals working alongside landscapers and civil engineers, integrated retaining wall systems such as Retainer-Rock® present an opportunity to deliver attractive, durable boundary solutions that enhance both the functionality and appearance of today's developments.
